Bacteriostatic water is sterile, pyrogen-free water for injection containing 0.9% (9 mg/ml) benzyl alcohol. This additive acts as a bacteriostatic preservative. Unlike pure sterile water, the chemical composition of BAC water allows for multiple withdrawals from the vial because the benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of most bacteria.
